Video Editor Resume (2026): Examples, Template Tips and the Link That Gets You Hired

Most video editor resumes get about ten seconds before someone clicks the reel link. If that link is missing, broken or points to a messy Google Drive folder, the resume rarely gets a second look.

We see this every day at Cutjamm. More than 6,000 editors in 100+ countries have built portfolios on our platform, and we help clients hire editors through our jobs board. The pattern is consistent. The resume gets you the click, and your work gets you the job. This guide shows you how to write a resume that does its part.

The short answer

A video editor resume should fit on one page. It needs a header with your editing niche and one portfolio link, a two-line summary, experience written as results, a grouped skills section, and education or certifications. Put the portfolio link at the very top, because hiring managers open it before they read anything else.

How video editors actually get screened

For in-house and agency roles, your resume usually goes through three stages. Software scans it for keywords. A recruiter skims it. Then the hiring editor or post supervisor opens your reel, and that last step decides most outcomes. A veteran editor on the Creative COW forums once said he had never hired anyone based on a resume. The reel decides.

So your resume has two jobs: get past the keyword filter, and get your reel opened.

Pick the right resume for the work you want

Content and brand editors (YouTube, ads, social, corporate) should lead with channels, brands, platforms and volume.

Film and TV editors should lead with a credits list: project title, format, your role and the production company. Assistant editor and editor are different credits, and people in the industry check, so list them exactly.

Freelancers should group clients under one "Freelance Video Editor" entry instead of listing ten short jobs.

Your header: one link, not seven

Write your lane in the title. "Video editor" alone tells a buyer nothing. Then use one portfolio link. Seven YouTube links and a Drive folder make the reader do work, and they won't. Check that the link is clickable in your PDF and loads properly on a phone.

Summary: two lines, specific

Use this formula: [niche] editor with [X years] cutting [formats] for [type of client], followed by one proof point. Three examples:

•        "YouTube editor with 3 years cutting long-form finance and tech videos. Edited 200+ videos for channels between 50K and 1.2M subscribers."

•        "Commercial editor focused on 15–60 second paid social ads for DTC brands. Delivers 20+ ad variations a week on a 48-hour turnaround."

•        "Entry-level editor trained in Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, with five spec projects in documentary and brand storytelling."

Experience: write results, not duties

"Edited videos for clients" tells the reader nothing new. Build each bullet from four parts: an action, what you cut, the format or volume, and the result.

•        Weak: Responsible for editing YouTube videos.

•        Strong: Edited 4 long-form videos a week (12–20 min) for a 400K-subscriber education channel. Average view duration rose from 4:10 to 6:05 over six months.

Numbers editors can use include videos delivered per week, turnaround time, views, retention or average view duration, ad results like CTR if the client shares them, and the number of deliverables cut from a single shoot. Only use numbers you can back up, because good interviewers will ask.

Freelance, ghost-editing and NDA work

Plenty of editors cut for creators and agencies who don't want their name out there. An NDA usually protects the client's identity, and you can still say you did the work. Describe the client by sector and size: "Lead editor for a 1M+ subscriber personal finance channel (client confidential)." Mention the NDA once. A disclaimer under every role reads as awkward.

Skills: grouped and honest

Group your tools so a reader can scan them in two seconds:

•        Editing: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer

•        Motion and color: After Effects, DaVinci Resolve color page

•        Audio: Adobe Audition, noise cleanup, music editing

•        AI tools: name the tool and the step it speeds up, for example "Descript for transcript-based rough cuts"

Cut anything you've only opened once. A list of 40 tools looks like padding and buries the ones that matter. Where a job post names a tool you really use, copy its exact spelling, since keyword filters match exact terms.

Designed resume or plain resume?

Send a plain, single-column resume to any job posted on a company careers page or a big job board. Tracking software struggles with columns, tables and graphics. Keep the designed Canva-style version for direct emails to a producer or a small studio, where a person reads it first. Your visual taste belongs in your portfolio anyway.

No paid experience yet?

Replace work history with a Projects section. Recut a trailer, make a spec ad for a brand you like, or edit a friend's podcast, and label each one honestly as spec or personal work. Our guide to building a video editing portfolio without paid work has ideas you can start this weekend.

Why Cutjamm is the strongest resume link you can send

Your resume is a one-page summary. Your Cutjamm portfolio is the proof behind it, and it's built only for video editors. That's why we're confident it's the best link to put in your header.

Here's what you get on the free plan:

•        One clean URL (cutjamm.com/yourname) that replaces a pile of YouTube and Drive links.

•        Unlimited projects. Paste your YouTube, Vimeo or Google Drive links and each one becomes a proper project page.

•        Fields for your role, category and tools on every project, which answers the first question any hiring editor has: what did you actually do here?

•        A showreel banner at the top of your page with autoplay, so your best 60 seconds play before anyone scrolls.

•        A spot on the Cutjamm public feed, where clients browse real edits, plus access to jobs posted on our board.

Cutjamm Pro is for editors who want their portfolio to work like a full personal website. FAQ

How long should a video editor resume be?

One page for most editors. Two pages are fine for senior film and TV editors with a long credit list.

Do I need a separate reel link and portfolio link?

If your reel sits at the top of your portfolio, as it does on Cutjamm, one link covers both.

Is video editing still a good career in 2027?

Yes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $75,420 for film and video editors (May 2025), with 4% projected job growth through 2034.

Should freelancers bother with a resume?

Yes, for agency and in-house roles, which often require one. For direct client work, your portfolio usually does the selling, so keep it updated first.
